Note: depending on the level of our corporation's participation, our website may not contain information about the summer camps that are carried out mostly by our business partners.
Introduction
Our summer camps primarily target grade 9-12 students with certain levels of music proficiency. Each camp would allow 20 to 40 participating students to take a glance at the fundamentals of music, film, architecture, urban planning, and civil engineering. During the seminars and lectures, students will be introduced to hot topics, such as gentrification, urban hollowing, and homelessness, and be offered opportunities to research, observe, and share their viewpoints.
Depending on the level of difficulty of the camp, students will then either finish up a half-built Minecraft city or build a new Minecraft city together. Students will then write and film an original movie in the Minecraft city. Thereafter, students will compose music scorings for the movie based on a wide range of provided motifs and guidelines, which will further introduce students to worldwide ethnic music elements. Students will then rehearse their music, and finally, live-perform their music as an orchestra, with their movie being played along at the commencement of the summer camp. Throughout the summer camp, ample guidance and assistance will be provided by our instructors to ensure a complete multimedia concert production at the end of the summer camp.
Levels of Difficulty
here at Mass Island, the longer a summer camps lasts, the more challenging it will be, and the more knowledge participating students can learn from it. We currently offer one-week, two-week, and five-week summer camps. Education professionals from local schools and universities may also partner with Mass Island to provide seminars and instructions for the students, but all seminars and instructions will be in understandable languages and with controllable volume and difficulty.
Students are expected to build up to 30 original Minecraft structures per week of summer camp and produce an original Minecraft movie and original music pieces, ranging from 30 minutes to 1 hour in total.
Technology
Students will conduct the summer camp activities based on Mass Island’s Minecraft server. Students are expected to bring a functioning laptop with unmodded Minecraft Java Edition installed. In case of technical failure during the summer camp, a few standby laptops are prepared by us.
Safety
We partner with and closely work with local first responders, our business partners, and other members of the local community to ensure students’ safety on campus, on the dining table, and on the road. All Mass Island employees must pass a rigorous training course on event safety before being qualified as a summer camp instructor. Special assistance and convenience will be ensured for incapacitated students.
Tuition
Depending on the terms and conditions Mass Island set forth with the partnering providers of dining, venue, accommodation, transport, teaching, technology, equipment, and more, each participating student’s tuition will be an equal division of the total cost of the summer camp on our side, plus a fee charged by us.
The fee charged by us may be up to $50, depending on the circumstances of the community. We waive the fee for families from marginalized communities, such as immigrants, people of color, and all families under federal poverty line.

General Partner: Mass Island may co-host our summer camps with a General Partner, who is expected to share resources with us, and also, jointly obtain required licenses and permits, secure other partners and contractors, advertise the summer camp, and organize the summer camp with us. A General Partner must be (1) a public or private high school, (2) a federal, state, local, or tribal government, (3) a public or private university, (4) a music education entity, (5) a charity or nonprofit in the areas of arts, education, or culture, (6) a music festival organization, or (7) a community service organization.
Venue: Mass Island will need one large classroom (or conference hall) and one concert hall, both with reliable internet connectivity and either a large LED screen or a projector-screen set, from our venue partner; more small classrooms (or meeting rooms), practice rooms, and rehearsal rooms may be provided.
Dining & Accommodations: If accommodation is provided, students will be provided 3 meals on each day of the summer camp; if accommodation is not provided, students will be provided 2 meals on each day of the summer camp (no breakfast). Healthy fruits and snacks will be provided at all time. Government licenses and certificates must be provided to be qualified as our dining partner or accommodations partner.
Transport: our summer camp potentially needs a shuttle bus transportation partner with a traceable history of safe, reliable operations.
Lecturers: educators from universities and high schools may partner with Mass Island to become a lecturer at our summer camps.
All partners are offered reasonable payments and named on all of our summer camp advertisement and promotion materials. However, considering that we are a small nonprofit aiming at providing affordable, artistic citizenship education, partners may not expect a significant monetary profit out of our summer camp partnership.
